Help Preventing Thoughts Going Off on Wild Tangents?
Question by Ben: Help preventing thoughts going off on wild tangents?
I especially notice this problem when watching movies. I will catch myself thinking about something else when I was originally trying to focus on the movie. It makes it difficult in understanding what is going on in the movie when I happen to miss important parts. This problem will also make itself noticeable when I am trying to pay attention in certain classes, but that is not always the case.
I would like to point out that external noise is not really a problem, as it is with some other people that have focusing issues. i.e. I do fine reading a book even when it is noisy.
Also — a related note — on average it takes me about 1-2 hours to fall asleep each night, which is probably because I cannot turn my thoughts off. I try to clear my mind but my thoughts keep me awake.
When I was a kid I was diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, and I was prescribed Ritalin, but I don’t take that anymore. Maybe now, in my adult life, I have a minor case of ADD?
I have tried using Adderal (~15 mg) which seems to help, but that always makes my insomnia worse (even when I take it during the day time and try to sleep at night after the noticeable effects of adderal wear off). And it is interesting to note that adderal gives me a calm focusing feeling, my friends say it gives them a speedy feeling. So this strengthens my belief that I have ADD/ADHD to some degree at least. I want to stay away from amphetamines because of the sleeping issues, and I wouldn’t want to be dependent on a drug anyway. So what should I do?
Does anyone have any tips or advice for me?
Thank you in advanced.

ADD/ADHD: I don’t recommend any of the powerful, and addictive central nervous system stimulants. An increased incidence of abuse of cocaine, crack cocaine, crystal meth, and other amphetamines has been reported among users of Ritalin, and other amphetamine related medications, which may well predispose them to later abuse street drugs, with all the undesirable consequences involved. The only medication for it not in the stimulant family that I know of is Strattera, which is structurally related to the antidepressants, and carries risks, and side effects of its own; see www.drugs.com. People in most Western countries often get several times more Omega 6, than Omega 3, when a far healthier ratio is 1:1 and that deficiency is thought to be a major factor in ADD/ADHD. Take at least 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, or the recommended dose of a high quality fish oil daily, like Carlsons or Melrose (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or its FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it! Females may benefit by balancing the DHA, & EPA versions of Omega 3 in fish, or krill oil with ALA flaxseed oil Omega 3, or at least one heaped tablespoonful of ground flaxseed, daily. Dr. Mercola rates “krill oil” much higher than fish oil, because it is far less easily oxidised, so you may want to check this out for yourself through the searchbar at mercola.com Vegetarians & vegans: Google: “Omega 3; algae; supplies” and use it with flaxseed. http://www.add-treatment.com/natural-remedies-for-adhd.html Hypnosis is merely a heightened state of suggestibility, in which you are better able to communicate with your subconscious mind. 85% of people are suggestible to some degree; 15% – 20% highly so, and 15% – 20% aren’t much at all, so you could either preferably seek professional hypnotherapy, or, if not an option, more along such lines is at http://your-mental-health.weebly.com/j.html where this came from; insomnia; see page 1.

Your answer is simple. Don’t try to control your thoughts because you can’t. The art of concentration is to move your focus from the distracting thought to the original thought whenever it occurs. It’s impossible to hold onto the original thought since the mind is not made that way.
